Speaker 2:

Welcome to Ella Go. My name is Lisa. Join me on the journey in having real raw and uncomfortable discussions about fitness, health and everything in between, because, let's be honest, this journey would suck if we don't get our shit together. Welcome back to the Elegoo podcast. Well, today's guest is Michelle Spieler. She is the creator of Mature Makeup Masterclass and is a 25-year pro makeup artist. But besides that, michelle is a huge influencer on social media. She has over 100,000 followers on Instagram, over 350,000 followers on TikTok and over 100 subscribers on YouTube. Michelle is a trailblazer in the realm of beauty and empowerment. With a passion for makeup and a commitment for breaking stereotypes, michelle fearlessly embraces the narrative of beauty beyond age. In a digital landscape often fixated on youth, she stands as a beacon of inclusivity, advocating for and celebrating the beauty of women over 40. Through her authentic voice and relatable content, she inspires her audience to defy societal norms and embrace their unique beauty at every stage of life. Welcome, michelle.

Speaker 1:

I mean, who is that girl that's so much more impressive in words than in real life?

Speaker 2:

Michelle, that's you girl, that is so you. I'm just so happy to have you here. Let's talk a little bit about your background, because how did you get into the beauty and skincare makeup? I know you talk a little bit about it once in a while on your social media, but let the audience know a little bit more.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I really need to go back and talk about it more often because we get new followers all the time, right? But I grew up in the 60s, 70s, 80s with a mom who looked like I Dream of Jeannie and she wore fake lashes every day of her life and she had big blonde hair and big boobs and she was fabulous and so I just became a product junkie because she was. And then my best friend worked at Nordstrom in the 90s in college and got free stuff and gave me free stuff and I was like I want free stuff. So when I got out of college I could not get hired as an illustrator. I went to school and got a bachelor of fine arts and illustration and so Nordstrom was hiring.

Speaker 1:

I needed health benefits and so it kind of all started there makeup and retail and then I started, you know, graduating to better brands. I worked with Mac, I did some training with Mac and then in 2003, I fell into television and commercial in LA because I'm from, I'm a Los Angeles native, and so from 2003, that was my new life I was a makeup artist for television and commercial.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, and I didn't know that because you mentioned that you were makeup. I just thought, okay, this woman is just on TikTok and she's blowing it up. But then, when you mentioned oh wait, a minute, I am a makeup artist, so let's talk about TikTok, because that's how I found you and, of course, being an older mom, I resonate so much with you and you, I mean, you're so relatable, so down to earth. Of course that's why you're blowing up. But how did that all happen?

Speaker 1:

Well, you know what, lisa, I think we both know that having kids a little later in life keeps us on the young side, right. So, where a lot of my friends my age have kids who are adults and in college, I've got this young Gen Z right who you know, everything's like you know, and so she got me on Musically really early before it was TikTok and we would sit and watch things and laugh and laugh and then, of course, quarantine hit and we were stuck home all together as families, right, we were all sheltered and we took to TikTok and we just it became our television. We'd watch it like eight hours a day and we would laugh and I said you know what? I'm not making money as a makeup artist, so I'm just going to have fun and start educating women.

Speaker 1:

Back then I was clean beauty, I only discussed clean beauty, but I felt like that was too exclusive and my heart was for women over 40. So I changed to mature makeup masterclass at the end of 2021. And it just I was the only one over 50 on TikTok doing it. Nobody over 50 was on TikTok discussing mature technique A hundred percent.

Speaker 2:

That's so funny.

Speaker 1:

You say you said musically, because that's exactly how I got it to say yeah, my daughter, they keep us young, they really do.

Speaker 2:

I know, okay, so a lot of the things that you talk about. I know I say that you're very relatable, but there was one time that you did a video about, you know, not having to break the bank when it comes to makeup, because I think that's what a lot of women think that oh my God, I can't afford all of that. And especially for, you know, myself and single moms, you know, who don't have a lot of funds and they want to still take care of their skin, how can someone like myself and other women who maybe not even being a single mom, but just not having all the funds, how can they still take care of their skin, still look beautiful without breaking the bank?

Speaker 1:

Yeah. So I fell in love with skincare at a young age. I was using oil of Olay in my teens. That was in the glass bottle every day. I was religious with SPF every day, starting in 1990. Day, I was religious with SPF every day, starting in 1990.

Speaker 1:

And, um, when I got into retail I was exposed to very bougie, expensive skincare and, of course, that that was always my first love, even more than makeup.

Speaker 1:

But then hard times hit and I left a Hollywood career to raise my daughter and, um, it was rough and you have to sacrifice, but you still are aging and you want to kind of combat that. So for I would say, before 2022, there was a 10, 11 year period where I had to rely on free samples. I had to rely on my sister working at a department store and getting stuff from her, like money was tight. So we've never lived in a better time, right, there's never been more product, more product knowledge, um. So what I did about a week ago is I did a whole YouTube look, it's all still in the box on affordable Korean skincare and let me tell you it's pretty much cheaper than a lot of US skincare and it's so juicy and so hydrating and you can get your more treatment products here in the US. But for really juicy, hydrating skincare and great, great cleansers, you can get great products for under $10, $20.

Speaker 2:

Wow, okay, so this is on your YouTube channel. We're going to give everyone the link so that they can check that out. So I was going to ask you what's the best skincare, makeup products that are affordable. Are we to say that it's in that box that you're holding right now?

Speaker 1:

It really is. I mean, we're talking about, you know, juicy essence that you know it's liquid and it would go after a cleanser, before a moisturizer. This is maybe $17 and you're going to have it probably at least six months at least. And I'll tell you though um, I don't think it's in here, but elf beauty, here it is. Elf beauty makes a cleansing bomb. Now, this is their travel size, but their cleansing bomb comes in a big jar for maybe $10, $11. And again, you'll probably have that like six months and it's like $10, $11. But it's cleansing. Skin is the best way to have good skin and you want to take your makeup off with a balm or an oil, Even if you have oily skin, it won't make you more oily. And then you want to go in with some kind of like really nice and expensive Korean foaming cleanser to splash all that away. So it's a double cleanse, but you'll have it like six months and you can get both pieces for probably under $20, $22.

Speaker 2:

Okay, that's see, that's affordable.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, and my. My most popular YouTubes are drugstore items and I'm not tone deaf. I'm really listening to my audience and that's why I think my subscribers are growing. On YouTube, especially, we're becoming a really tight community. We call ourselves the look good, close up club, because I don't teach social media makeup. I want you to look and feel beautiful close up with your family and friends, and my top videos are like here's a whole face of elf makeup you know, and wet and wild LA girls you know, I mean there's.

Speaker 1:

there's such great products in the drugstore. It gets me excited If I can look like a Chanel ad, but using all Milani. Come on, no brainer.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, and I love that you do that. Like you, I mean we would see you and you're like, okay, do you know what products I use? And I'm like no way, no, freaking way. And then when you say, when, wow, I mean that's back in the day.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, and here's the most important part, lisa Again, not just social media makeup. It doesn't just look good as I do it. I'm talking. Eight, nine, 10 hours later, when I go to take it off, I'm in the mirror and I'm like I don't even know if I want to take this off. This looks good still.

Speaker 2:

I love that. I love that. Okay, so the next question I had was what is the one skincare item that a woman should never skimp on?

Speaker 1:

Cleanser.

Speaker 2:

Wow.

Speaker 1:

I know so many women and listen, I haven't been a single mom. I can't even relate to how hard that must be. But when you are tired at the end of the day and you've poured into everyone but yourself, you have to take that day off. Even if it's no makeup, even if it's just SPF, even if you wore no SPF and no makeup, even if it's just SPF, even if it's you wore no SPF and no makeup, at least put some kind of like foaming cleanser on. There's nothing better for the skin than cleansing it.

Speaker 2:

Wow, Okay, so is there? I mean, you know there's so many different types of cleansers and obviously it's based on your skin, but at the end of the day, just like you said, you're tired and that's the last thing you want to do. I mean, would you say that even using one of those like those wipes are okay, Like what are your thoughts are on that?

Speaker 1:

I personally don't like wipes, but I do keep them in case I make a mistake or because I shoot so much content I might have to take a face off and then reapply for another brand. But I do have friends that keep wipes right on the nightstand so when they get into bed and they're like you know, at least they can take the day off. But I think that there's nothing better than cleansing the face and splashing it off, and it literally can take one minute. Yeah, yeah, and it changes the game for your skin.

Speaker 2:

And it feels good.

Speaker 1:

So good, and you did one good thing for yourself at the end of the day before you hop into bed, you know. Think of it as self-love, self-care.

Speaker 2:

Oh, michelle, you just dropped, dropped Mike right there. I love that, okay, Okay, all right. So let's talk a little bit about makeup. What are essential makeup products? Or like what's the bare minimum? You know, I think that even for me, I'm like should I do foundation, or is it foundation, blush and mascara? Like what is the bare minimum that's essential?

Speaker 1:

Yeah, so for your eyebrows are gorgeous, by the way, but for a lot of us, as we get older, we do need an eyebrow. So I threw it.

Speaker 1:

I threw a eyebrow pencil in real quick. Um, I did a mandelic peel last night, so that's why I'm doing a podcast with no makeup on. But here's what I think the minimum women need. I think women need a really nice, like tinted moisturizer right Now. This is even if it has SPF in it. I still want y'all wearing an SPF, I don't care who makes it. I want everyone wearing an SPF every single day. But the minimum you need is a tinted moisturizer just to even out your skin. Okay, and then, if you need something pretty under the eye, you could do a little color corrector. These are by Catrice. They're $4 each.

Speaker 2:

Oh, wow.

Speaker 1:

This one is under my eyes, so it's making my eye really light and bright. But if you're deeper skin like you, lisa, you could do the peachy one which, by the way, I have all around my nose because I'm so red from my peel and the peach counteracts red. So now you're only like, let's say, you're only into two products, and then brows and mascara, and then find some kind of lip product or lip balm that can also be your blush, and then boom, you just banged out blush and lips with one product.

Speaker 2:

Let me ask you a question because I'm finding, as I get older, the less makeup I wear.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, what's up with that? Yeah, well, one we're more confident. Right, we're just more confident, but I think because the less layers we have on our maturing texture and fine lines and all of the above, I think it just looks more youthful. I really preach that skin first than makeup and if you really work hard on your skin, you'll need less makeup. You'll want to wear less makeup because you'll want to show off your hard work, and it really does benefit us to wear sheer, thinner layers because it lets our skin look like skin.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I love that. Now you said you just said that you hardly have any makeup on.

Speaker 1:

I have no makeup on. So here's what I have on. I have on a tinted SPF. It's barely tinted, though. Watch this, it's like beige. So what it does is it kind of makes your skin look better than it is, because it floods out your flaws. So that's. I have that all over my face, I have Lashify on and I can wear them for about three, four or five nights. And then I have the Catrice under my eye. It's the pink, and the peach is all around the nose where I'm red, and then I have on just a brow pencil.

Speaker 2:

Unbelievable, and I think that is why there's so many people that go to you because it's you. Yeah, you know. When you wake up and your husband wakes up and sees you, he goes to you because it's you. Yeah, you know, when you wake up and your husband wakes up and sees you, he goes. Okay, that's her, you know. It's not like who is this? When that person takes off all that makeup because I think that we see so much on social media we think that that is what we need to do. Some of us I mean I know my daughter thinks that and she thinks I need to put more makeup I'm like, honey, no, it's going to look horrible. I mean, you maybe is good, but not for me. So I love that you preach about that. You show skin and you're talking about products that are not just they're going to not hide us, it's going to amplify us.

Speaker 1:

Yes, I also do a lot of videos and stories where I'm not wearing a stitch of makeup, like even less than this, because I want women to see like this is real life y'all. This is it. This is the dark circles, this is the sun damage, because I think it makes other women go. Oh okay, I'm doing okay in life because that's how she looks.

Speaker 1:

So I'm doing okay in life. So I do a lot and I'll be honest, those videos where I'm not wearing a stitch of makeup they don't do as well, but they attract my real tribe and that's women who want authenticity.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I love that. Okay, let's switch gears here. What do you do to age gracefully? And are there any rules and I think we kind of talked about that a little bit when it comes to, you know, for mature women, when it comes to makeup?

Speaker 1:

Yeah, okay. So first and foremost, I thought I wanted to age gracefully until I got into my fifties, and then I'm like hell, no, I'm not going down without a fight. So a year and a half ago, about a year ago, I got a lower facelift, and so what they do is they just pull up this, they pull up your muscles, they pull excess skin and then the neck, but it's. I went to a super conservative guy, so even my neck is maybe a little looser than a lot of people would want and maybe my jawline's not as snatched, but I needed to still look like me. So at least I got rid of some of this sag.

Speaker 1:

But the rest of it is all me. I didn't have a brow lift. These are my cheeks. People always say I have filler in my cheek. I'm like this is what I was born with. Sorry to disappoint y'all.

Speaker 1:

So I do believe in surgery for sag if someone can afford it. I realize a lot of women can't, and so that's why SPF is the most important thing. I do see women who are 60 who have never had surgery, but they didn't grow up in the sun like I did in Southern California. So sun damage plays a big, big factor in how we age, but it's never too late. I've seen women reverse their skin and within a year, like reverse it and look beautiful. Um, and it starts with good SPF every day and then, I think, just having really like juicy, hydrating skin. If you feel glowy like, if you feel like your skin looks pretty, then you're just going to have more confidence every day.

Speaker 1:

And as far as makeup, like we discussed, I think less is more. I think if you are going somewhere special for the evening and it's dim lighting, yeah you can wear maybe a full coverage, everything and the lashes and all. You can go real heavy because it's at night, so the lighting's dim, but during the day we want to look beautiful, close up to our family and friends. We don't want cakey makeup on our face. We don't want makeup settling into our fine lines. Yeah.

Speaker 2:

You know, michelle, I remember when you did the surgery. I remember it and I'm like, wow, this woman is really talking about this and you were so honest at each phase of healing, like each recovery phase and what that looked like. And you know, I did read some of the comments. Some of them were not nice, but you are so like, so authentic and being just transparent and being like you know why and you know, when I think about aging, gracefully, I think that just means that you can do whatever the hell you want to do. You know and I'm going to.

Speaker 1:

That's so true, Because everyone women are always like pro-choice, pro-choice. Really, You're pro-choice, but you're not pro-choice if someone chooses surgery for themselves. A lot of hypocrisy on social media A hundred percent and you know what?

Speaker 2:

I agree with you so much. I just turned 50 this year and I remember saying to myself I would never oh my God, no, I'm going to not do it. And then I turned 50 and I'm like, hey, I'm having me a good interest in doing something like that. Like, honestly, the minute you hit it, it's like something just turned on and your skin is not the same, your body's not the same. But I'm open to it. And I got to say I'm really happy where I am when I think about where we are in society and the technology we are in such a great place because there's so many things that are out there that are not too evasive. If you wanted to go there, you can, and it's kind of like taking these little steps, but I really believe that you can do whatever the F you want to do and who cares? And I think that you know when you talked about that, I really put you on another level.

Speaker 1:

Oh, thank you, it was important. First of all, I'm very forgetful, right? So when you tell lies, you have to remember what you've been saying.

Speaker 1:

I don't have the memory for that, so I have to live 100% open and honest so that I don't have to go oh wait, did I hide this fat? And I personally know some big, mature influencers right now who have had surgery and they're not disclosing it and they make it sound like, oh well, I'm getting this injection or I'm getting this. And they make it sound like, oh well, I'm getting this injection, or I'm getting this or I'm doing this skin care and I'm like that is so unfair.

Speaker 1:

That is so unfair. But they saw what I went through and they saw how ugly women can be and the jealousy and the judging and I think that they just didn't want to go through that. So they're hiding the fact that they had a facelift.

Speaker 2:

I love that you said that and again, your transparency is why you have so many followers. Okay, so what's the one thing mature women are doing with their makeup that actually is aging them?

Speaker 1:

I don't know how to say this, so I'm just going to cut to the chase. Stop following young influencers, because you're doing their tips and tricks and you all are looking like drag Queens, which I love. A drag queen, listen, I'm a big drag fan. I've done drag makeup not on myself, on others, but it's not flattering on mature women and we can't do the big concealer and the baking, and I think a lot of mature women know that now. I think social media is doing such a great job at educating, but we really do need less concealer, less foundation or just place it very, very strategically. But again, skin first then makeup.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, you're right about that. I mean I love seeing them do their transformation, but I say that's not going to look good and you know it's nice, but not for me. So I love that you said that. Okay, let's again switch gears. Okay, Of course, there's a lot of listeners here that are active and they're trying to be, you know, live their best life ever, and I know that, even as someone who runs, I used to like not wear makeup, but there's times where I'm like I kind of want to look good because there's gonna be pictures and I want to take pictures of myself in this race. So what is your advice in regards to that? Like, what is a product that you would recommend to women who want to look good while they're running or being active? But that is sweat proof.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I think that's great. I would. I was a runner all through my thirties and I'm going to tell you I miss it. I miss the runners high, but my knees are no bueno, so I cannot do it.

Speaker 1:

So I really am jealous of all y'all that can still run. I really am. Um, if I were going to do, let's say, a 5k today and they were going to photograph me or interview me at the end, here's the minimum I would do. I would have my lashify on or there's really affordable brands in the drugstore false scarab, um, and you put them underneath. So it's so great because when someone looks at your eye it's like, oh, she doesn't have. They can see my lashes growing out of my eyelid, but the Lashify or Lilac Street or Falscara goes underneath and I would definitely wear them in a race.

Speaker 1:

But I would wear a waterproof eyeliner. My favorite one is by Stila. You can get it at Ulta. It is 24 hour waterproof. It's a felt tip pin. Even if you don't know how to do a wing, screw the wing, just line your upper eyes and it's going to pop that lash line. Even if you can't wear mascara, if you don't want to do a fake lash, you could do tubing mascara, because tubing mascara only is removed with warm water. And let me tell you, tubing mascara does not come off, it doesn't flake, it doesn't crumble, it doesn't smear, because it's tubing mascara. It only comes off with warm water removal. I would totally. I would wear that in a race and then you don't need blush, right, cause you're going to get that gorgeous flush. Um, I would definitely have my eyebrows on, okay, and I find most brow products stay on during sweat but there's a product called wonder brow.

Speaker 1:

My sister wore it to Hawaii one year and she wore her brows. She didn't have to touch them up for a whole week of ocean and pool.

Speaker 2:

Wow.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, so those are the bare minimums that I would do to look cute if I was working out.

Speaker 2:

I love that, and you just taught me a couple of things. Okay, so let me ask you one thing. I've always been dying to ask you this your daughter like, what does she think about you and how you're blowing it up on social media, youtube and all that.

Speaker 1:

She's so not impressed.

Speaker 2:

I was afraid you were going to say that, wow, okay.

Speaker 1:

Listen, lisa, once in a while, if Summer Friday sends me a lip balm that's trending in the Gen Z generation, then suddenly I'm Santa Claus. But other than that, she she's not a big makeup wearer. She likes that whole glossier look like a little bit of found, like a little bit of mascara. She'll do some little faux freckles, maybe a tinted lip balm. That's about it. I mean, she's real minimalistic, she's. They're beautiful, they're young right.

Speaker 1:

She's only 16. She's about to turn 17. But yeah, she's not. I mean, once in a while, when her friends are like your mom has a really big TikTok, she's like, oh yeah, I guess she does. I guess my mom is kind of cool.

Speaker 2:

But yeah, okay, all right, I don't feel alone with that.

Speaker 1:

It's Gen Z. They're so unimpressed.

Speaker 2:

I know. I know. I also wanted to ask you this, Michelle when you think back where you are now, would you have ever guessed that you'd be where you are right now?

Speaker 1:

Absolutely not in 100 million years. Because, listen, I was the girl behind the camera. I didn't go into modeling or acting because I like to be behind the scenes. I like to make other people look beautiful. I love to. I'm all about like encouragement and words of affirmation.

Speaker 1:

So anyone who's in my chair, I just kind of like shower them with authentic compliments, not fake, but like I build them up. So the hour that they're in my chair they feel good internally and then they look good externally and they leave my chair with their heads held a little bit higher. So I never thought I would be the girl on camera. But thank God for my Hollywood education because I learned how to make people look good on high def and that translated to my own life high def. And that translated to my own life. Because if you wear cakey makeup on high def you will be fired. These people have. I mean high def shows little hairs, it shows acne scars, it's so unforgiving, it shows everything that the naked eye can't even see, and so that worked for me to build a social media following for mature women.

Speaker 1:

Wow, yeah, it's shocking to me Like TikTok literally changed my life.

Speaker 2:

I believe it. So what's new for you? What's coming up? What are exciting things that are coming up for you, Michelle?

Speaker 1:

So I was just accepted to be in this year's Ulta Beauty Collective and when my agency told me I literally projectile tears like came out.

Speaker 1:

I'm so used to being so ignored. I've never been on a brand trip. I've never been invited to a brand party, except Path Magic, but that's because they thought I still lived in LA. Yeah, yeah, I've been doing this what? Three, four, four years and I've never been invited anywhere. And Ulta Beauty Collective I don't know how many of us they have, but they, yeah they. They chose me to be one of their spokespersons for the mature community for this year, 2024, 2025. And I'm so honored and I cannot wait to represent mature women everywhere. And Ulta is my, that's my go-to.

Speaker 2:

I like.

Speaker 1:

Sephora Okay, it's fine, they have some great things. But Ulta because of the hair department, because of the affordable drugstore, the affordable makeup you can get Korean beauty and skincare at Ulta. I love Ulta so much, so this is like I'm in shock, Like I applied, but I was like I'm not going to make it.

Speaker 2:

Wow, you know, michelle, I'm so happy for you Like. I'm so genuinely happy for you because I feel like you know I'm shocked that, first of all, I feel like you know I'm shocked that first of all, you were good. You told me that you haven't been. I thought this woman is going all over the world. She's probably been invited to all these places and that's kind of shocking, um, but I am genuinely so excited and proud of you that you are representing us.

Speaker 1:

You really are. I just love that You're the first person outside of my husband and daughter that know Lisa.

Speaker 2:

Well, after this, everyone's going to know yes, no, this is amazing, michelle, you are just an amazing woman and, again, thank you so much for saying yes to this and I think anyone who's listening to her much for saying yes to this, and I think anyone who's listening to her, please follow her. This is the most genuine, relatable woman that you will see on social media and in a world that we don't see a lot of authenticity on social media, here she is and she truly is the beacon of empowerment and women empowerment. So, michelle, thank you so much for being a part of this and women empowerment.

Speaker 1:

So, michelle, thank you so much for being a part of this. Oh, thanks, lisa, I love you and I just have such a heart for women. I am the biggest cheerleader for women and that means a lot. Your words mean a lot. I'm so thankful. I love podcasts too. Like it's my favorite thing.

Speaker 2:
